The Big Sky Outdoor Championships began on Wednesday in Greeley, and the Montana Grizzlies couldn't have asked for a much better opening day. Four women competed in the heptathlon's opening four events, and the Griz walked away from the day with 11 total personal best marks.
Senior Morgan Radtke led the way. An All-Big Sky performer during the indoor pentathlon, Radtke put together a fantastic opening day to sit in contention for more league honors. She is in fourth place with 3,055 points thanks to three event PR's.
Freshman Brooke Stayner sits right behind her in the standings at 2,907 points. It was a triple PR day for the Missoula native. It is the first heptathlon for Stayner and fellow freshman Ainsley Shipman, who also had a big day. Shipman had career best performances in all four events, finishing the day in eighth place at 2,627 points.
Whitney Morrison isn't competing at 100 percent, but toughed through an injury and still had an outstanding day. She is just outside of scoring range in ninth place with 2,558 points.
"Morgan is such a seasoned veteran and her performance today really showed that. She went out and did what she was capable of in four straight events," head coach Doug Fraley said. "Brooke, Ainsley, and Whitney had very solid days as well and have put themselves in good position for day two."
Shipman's PR time of 15.09 put her in sixth place after one event while Radtke found herself in seventh.
The high jump provided a boost for all four Grizzlies, with a clean sweep of PR's for all four. The highlight came from Radtke. In perhaps her strongest event, Radtke set a new personal best by clearing 5-8. It matched the best jump of the day, increasing her total score by 891 points to move her up to third place.
Stayner and Morrison each cleared 5-1 while Shipman jump 4-8.25.
Radtke took the momentum from the high jump and carried it into the shot put. On the final throw of the day, she recorded a new PR by more than three feet. The throw of 36-5 was the second furthest of the day, and kept her in third place by a narrow margin.
The freshman duo also PR'd. Shipman went 30-11.75 while Stayner had a throw of 30-1. The event is where the injury really hampered Morrison, forcing her to throw left-handed. Despite that, she still recorded a mark of 26-7.25 to keep herself in the running.
The day concluded with the 200-meter. Stayner's speed again shone through with a PR of 25.60 seconds for a third-place finish in the event. It brought her point total to 2,907 – good for fifth-place - at the end of the first day.
Radtke and Shipman finished side-by-side in the event just under 26.5 seconds, and Morrison closed out at 27.09.
The Grizzlies currently all sit inside the top nine in the competition with three events remaining tomorrow. It starts with the long jump, before they move on to the javelin throw and then close things out with the 800-meter.

Stayner kicked things off for Montana in the first heat of the 100-meter hurdles. The event is a strength for the freshman, and she proved why with a fast time of 14.41 despite a small stumble down the stretch. It was the third-best time of the 11 heptathletes, putting her into good position after one event. The Griz set or match their PR's across the board in the high jump as well! Through two events, here's how things stand.
