The 2023 outdoor track season officially came to an end for the Montana Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon in Sacramento. Erin Wilde, the final of seven Griz athletes to reach the first round of the NCAA Championships, tied for 38th in the high jump.
Montana saw four of the seven athletes exceed their seed entering the meet, and end the 2023 ahead of schedule in the rebuild under first-year head coach Doug Fraley.
"I'm very proud of each of our athletes who qualified for the NCAA Championships First Round and represented Griz Athletics against the very best athletes west of the Mississippi River," Fraley said. "For those who finished their Griz career at this meet, it represents a really high level of achievement. For those returning, it is a huge building block for when they return to this meet in the future."
The Big Sky Champion in the event, Wilde cleared the opening bar of the event at 5-5.75 on her first attempt. She wouldn't be able to get higher, going out of the competition at 5-7.75. It completes a very successful freshman season for the Whitefish product.
Wilde started the year with a jump of 5-3.25 and improved over the next three meets. She won a pair of regular season events before going to the Big Sky Championships in Greeley and jumping a career-best 5-9.25 for the win.
The progress made by the freshman this year should have her in a great position to make a repeat trip to this event for years to come.
