Griz fall to pair of unbeatens

The Montana softball team dropped games to Southeastern Louisiana and Eastern Illinois on Saturday as the Mardi Gras Mambo continued in Youngsville, La.

The Grizzlies (2-2) lost 5-0 to the Lions and 9-4 to the Panthers. Both teams improved to 4-0 with their victories over Montana.

Against Southeastern Louisiana, Montana had just one hit, a third-inning single by Makena Strong as three SLU pitchers combined for the shutout.

The Lions got to Montana starter Emmalyn Brinka (1-1) for one run in the second, two in the third and two in the fourth, both of which were unearned.

Freshman Rylee Rehbein threw the final two innings in her Montana debut, holding the Lions scoreless. She allowed two hits.

Montana fell behind Eastern Illinois 5-0 after three innings, the Panthers chasing Griz starter Grace Haegele (1-1) after 2 2/3 innings.

Montana pulled within 5-3 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Jessica Stanfield and a pinch-hit, two-out, two-run double by Riley Stockton.

The Panthers scored two in the fifth and two more in the sixth off freshman pitcher Nyeala Herndon, also making her collegiate debut on Saturday. Rehbein pitched the seventh.

Montana added one final run in the bottom of the sixth in an inning notable for a pair of freshmen collecting their first hits as Grizzlies.

Madison Tarrant singled to right and Riley Peschek later had an RBI double to right-center that scored Jocelyn Eisen.

Presley Jantzi and Stanfield both had two hits in the game. Jantzi went 2 for 4 to up her team-leading batting average to .462.

Montana will face Nicholls (3-2) at 9 a.m. (MT) on Sunday. The Colonels have won three of four in Youngsville, outscoring their opponents 25-6 in their three wins.
