Montana freshman Riley Peschek was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week on Monday by the league office after helping the Grizzlies go 4-2 at the Montana Softball Classic.
Â
Peschek batted .500 over six games, going 11 for 22 with six extra-base hits. She led the team with seven runs scored and also drove in seven, second most on the team behind Jocelyn Eisen's nine.
Â
The Grizzlies had two wins over Holy Cross and two against Northern Illinois at its home tournament, with losses by one and two runs.
Â
Peschek joins Maygen McGrath as the only freshmen in program history to be named Big Sky Player of the Week.
Â
Peschek helped the Grizzlies bat .351 over six games last week and score 39 runs on 60 hits. Twenty-four of Montana's 60 hits went for extra bases.
Â
Peschek, who has started all 26 games at shortstop, is batting .329 on the season and leads the team in runs (17) and RBIs (16). Her 14 extra-base hits also lead the team.
Â
"She's taken on a big role and has really risen to the occasion," said coach Melanie Meuchel. "She's been very consistent for us both defensively and offensively.
Â
"I'm really excited for her and look forward to more success for her. She's a key player for us."
Â
Peschek had at least one hit in all six games at the Montana Softball Classic to up her hitting streak to nine, the longest active streak on the team.
Â
She had three hits in both games of a doubleheader against Holy Cross on Thursday and had a two-hit game against Northern Illinois on Saturday.
Â
Montana does not play again until hosting North Dakota in a three-game series at Grizzly Softball Field from March 22-24.
