
Montana falls to Northern Colorado in series finale

The Bears, who won 5-1 and 13-2 on Saturday, completed the series sweep, leaving the Grizzlies (14-23, 0-6 BSC) still searching for their first Big Sky Conference win.

Northern Colorado (19-19, 4-2 BSC), which never trailed in the series after the fifth inning of Game 1, scored two runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth on Sunday to build an 11-3 lead.

Facing their second consecutive run-rule loss, the Grizzlies scored twice in the fifth with two outs on a two-run double by Jessica Stanfield, then got solo home runs from Kynzie Mohl and Riley Peschek in the sixth to close to within 11-7.

Montana used four pitchers in the game, with starter Rylee Rehbein (6-5) taking the loss. Grace Haegele pitched the final four innings, allowing five hits.

The Bears scored two runs on three hits in the top of the first, the Grizzlies got one back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double to left-center by Kelly Sweyer that scored Peschek.

Montana scored two more in the bottom of the second to move within 4-3, but Northern Colorado pulled away over the next two innings, scoring seven runs on seven hits to build an eight-run cushion.

The Grizzlies were one out away from being run-ruled in the bottom of the fifth when Sweyer singled to left, followed by Hannah Jablonski singling through the left side.

Stanfield hit a 1-1 pitch to the gap in right-center to make it 11-5, extending the game.

Mohl hit her second home run of the season in the sixth. Two batters later, Peschek hit her team-leading fourth home run.

Erin Caviness picked up win No. 11 on the season for Northern Colorado in relief, with Isabelle DiNapoli throwing a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Sweyer had two hits for the Grizzlies, Peschek scored twice.

Montana will host Idaho State (18-20, 0-3 BSC) next Friday and Saturday at Grizzly Softball Field. The Bengals had their weekend series against Sacramento State called off because of unplayable field conditions in Pocatello.
