Utah defeated the Montana women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula by a score of 78-38.
Â
The Utes (5-3) built a 42-25 halftime lead, then pulled away in the second half for their second win in a row.
Â
Jocelyn Land led the Lady Griz (1-5) with 11 points, while Avery Waddington had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Â
It was Montana's lowest scoring game since falling 69-38 to Michigan State last December at the West Palm Beach Classic.
Â
The Lady Griz shot 10 for 58 (.172) overall, 6 for 37 (.162) from the 3-point line.
Â
"Kind of a weird game. I don't know that I've ever been part of it where the shooting – inside, outside, all over the court – was that off," said coach Nate Harris, whose team hadn't played since Nov. 19.
Â
"I don't know if it was nerves, legs, too much time off, too little. I don't know. We're going to have to get that figured out because 17 percent isn't going to get it done."
Â
Utah shot 50 percent in the first half to build a 17-point lead at the break, then went 8 for 18 from the 3-point line in the second half.
Â
The Utes had four players in double figures, with Lani White scoring 16 and Maty Wilke finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Â
Utah out-rebounded Montana 53-32, with 44 of the Utes' rebounds coming on the defensive end off 48 missed shots for the Lady Griz.
Â
"We were in transition constantly, and that makes everything harder," said Harris. "Great job by Utah. They played great."
Â
Mack Konig had nine points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for Montana, which faced Oregon, Washington, South Dakota State, BYU and Utah over the last three weeks.
Â
As of Saturday afternoon, those teams are a combined 34-5 on the season.
Â
"There was some good basketball played and a lot to be learned," said Harris. "We have to keep moving forward. Our schedule gets a little more manageable here on out."
Â
Montana will face North Dakota (1-7) and St. Thomas (1-6) next week as part of the Big Sky Conference-Summit League Challenge.
Â
"We've got to respond the right way. Was it hard? Yes. Did we get better? Yes. But we've got to take advantage of the opportunities in front of us and get after North Dakota on Wednesday," said Harris.
Â
The Lady Griz will face the Fighting Hawks on Wednesday in Grand Forks and host the Tommies next Saturday night.
