Griz finish strong at Tom Gage Classic
5/9/2025 6:58:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Montana track and field team concluded the regular season on Friday afternoon in Bozeman by competing in the Tom Gage Classic. The small squad of Grizzlies had a solid overall day with 12 overall PRs from the team in limited competition.
Â
The biggest improvement of the day came from sophomore distance runner Truman Thompson. Thompson took advantage of the altitude conversions in Bozeman with an adjusted time of 1:50.03 in the men's 800m.
Â
Thompson finished second behind Montana State's Harvey Cramb, but his time moves him up to fourth in the Big Sky Conference this year.
Â
Keagen Crosby finished close behind Thompson with an unadjusted time of 1:51.16, which was good for a third place finish.
Â
"Truman and Keagen had tremendous runs in the 800m," head coach Doug Fraley said. "Those were big PRs and move them up significantly in the conference standings."
Â
Montana brought its full contingent of pole vaulters in the most talented and deep field of the day. The Grizzlies top performers had good days, led by Cason Weeden (17-0.25) in the men's and Samantha Serex (13-2.25) in the women's with a pair of top three finishes.
Â
Weeden had multiple attempts at 17-4, which would have broken Zane Johnson's school record, but came up just short on his attempts.
Â
"Another great performance for Carson Weeden in the men's pole vault," Fraley said. "He tied his PR and was a whisker from clearing the school record on two of his jumps at 17-4."
Â
Shealyne McGee had a season-best mark of 13-2.25 to move up into sixth place in the Big Sky Conference.
Â
Freshman Isabelle Berry ran a big PR in the women's 100-meter hurdles and moved into the top 20 in the league in the event, finishing second in 14.86 seconds.
Â
Brody Thornsberry, another freshman, finished second in the men's long jump with a PR distance of 22-5.75 to move up a few spots in the Big Sky performance list.
Â
The women's distance group had a day full of big improvements at the 1,500m distance. Heidi Olson led the way for the Griz with a time of 4:52.14, which converts to a PR of 4:45.84 at the Bozeman altitude.
Â
Olson was one of four Grizzlies to PR in the event on Friday, joined by Shay Pederson, Kayla Ingraham, and Olvia Coll.
Â
There were a number of Grizzlies who competed for the last time this season on Friday, and several who will close their Grizzly careers with their performances in Bozeman. The Grizzlies will have 21 student-athlete graduate over the weekend, and Fraley thanked each of them for the time they devoted to the program.
Â
"I'm very proud of the graduating seniors who finished their Griz Track and Field careers today," Fraley said. "We really appreciate those individuals' efforts and their contribution to our program."
