The Montana women's golf team opened its final fall tournament with rounds of 315 and 314 on Monday as the French Broad Collegiate Invitational opened at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove in Arden, N.C.
Â
Kate Bogenschutz had the Grizzlies' best score on the day, a 76 in Round 2. Zoe Bar-Or (78-79) leads Montana and is tied for 41st overall.
Â
"We bogeyed that course to death," said coach Jimmy Mee. "It's straight-forward what you have in front of you, but if you're a little off, it can get you.
Â
"If you're going to get a good score, you have to hit really good golf shots."
Â
Bogenschutz (82-76), Bella Johnson (79-79) and Ellie Sticha (77-81) are tied for 44th, Katie Lewis (81-80) sits 51st.
Â
Montana was one of only five teams in the 11-team field that completed two rounds before play was halted at 6:45 p.m. local time. The Grizzlies are in 10th place.
Â
The tournament will resume on Tuesday morning.
Â
"Off the tee it's pretty forgiving. The fairways are pretty big. The greens are firm and the rough around the greens is challenging," said Mee.
Â
"If you're not hitting your approach shots where you want to, up-and-downs are hard to come by."
Â
The highlight of the day was the early play of Sticha, a freshman playing in the lineup for the first time in her collegiate career.
Â
Starting on No. 13, she was even par when she got to the front nine, then went birdie-birdie on Nos. 2 and 3, chipping in on both to get to 2-under through nine holes.
Â
"It was cool to see her get off to a hot start in her first time in the lineup," said Mee. "It was fun to see her get some confidence going."
Â
Only two golfers in the 57-player field had more first-round birdies than Sticha's three.
Â
Maryland opened with a 302 and was crushing the second round when play was halted. The Terrapins are 14-under on their second 18 with only a handful of holes to finish.
Â
Furman, which opened with a 292, UNC Charlotte, Penn State and Illinois round out the top five.
