The Montana women's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a 10th-place finish on Tuesday at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational in Arden, N.C.
Â
The Grizzlies shot rounds of 315, 314 and 316 over the tournament's 54 holes at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove to finish one stroke ahead of Chattanooga in the 11-team field.
Â
Freshman Zoe Bar-Or led Montana for the third time in four fall tournaments. She finished 35th after carding scores of 78, 79 and 75. She finishes the fall with a stroke average of 75.92.
Â
"Her game fits any type of golf course," said coach Jimmy Mee of his freshman.
Â
"She hits her irons so well and gives herself so many opportunities. As long as her driver is cooperating, she can play pretty much any course you put in front of her."
Â
Maryland (302-273-287) had the top two individual finishers and won the tournament by 22 strokes over UNC Charlotte. Penn State, Illinois and Furman rounded out the top five.
Â
Of the 33 rounds played by the 11 teams over two days, 21 were in the 300s.
Â
"If you're going to go really low, you have to play really well," said Mee. "The greens give you opportunities but if you miss them, there is a good chance you're making bogey.
Â
"It's hard to get it up and down. That's how it's going to work out there."
Â
Montana's top two spots were held down by freshmen after Ellie Sticha, in the lineup for the first time, tied for 44th with rounds of 77, 81 and 79.
Â
"She didn't have close to her best stuff this week, so hopefully she learned that she can go out there and compete and contribute," said Mee.
Â
"It's going to be fun to see how she develops. The potential is endless."
Â
Katie Lewis (81-80-77) had four birdies over the final round and finished 47th. Bella Johnson (79-79-85) finished 50th, Kate Bogenschutz (82-76-87) placed 51st in the 57-golfer field.
Â
Montana won't compete again until the Mountain Classic Match Play in Palm Desert, Calif., in February.
Â
"We did not play our best golf this week, but if we take it the right way and use it to work a little harder going into the spring, I think it can be a healthy way to go into the offseason," said Mee.
Â
The Grizzlies had a scoring average of 308.92 for the fall, which included a team title at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate at the Missoula Country Club in late September.
Â
"We had stretches of golf this fall when we looked like we can compete with anybody, then we had stretches when it wasn't exactly what we wanted," said Mee.
Â
"I'm hopeful we learned we can compete and are able to develop some confidence. If we take care of what we can take care of, we have a chance to prove a lot of people wrong."
