Bobby Hauck, a Montana native, University of Montana alum, the winningest football coach in Big Sky Conference history, and among the winningest coaches in all of college football, announced his retirement as Grizzly head coach on Wednesday, effective immediately.
Â
Hauck and Montana Director of Athletics Kent Haslam will address the media in a press conference set for 10 a.m. (MT) Wednesday in the Adams Center's West Auxiliary Gym.
Â
Hauck, the 37th head coach in Montana history, retires after 14 seasons leading his alma mater and 19 seasons overall as a head football coach. In that time, he became one of the winningest coaches in all of college football with a 166-92 (.643) overall record and a 151-43 (.778) record with the Grizzlies.
Â
During his two tenures at UM, he led Montana to eight Big Sky Championships, four national championship appearances, 20 wins in the FCS playoffs (the third-most in tournament history), and 13 playoff appearances.
Â
He retires as the winningest coach in Big Sky Conference history in both overall wins (151) and conference wins (86). At the end of the 2025 season his 151 victories made him the winningest active coach in the FCS and the third-winningest active coach in all of D-I football at his current program. His 166 overall wins made him the eighth-winningest active D-I coach.
Â
He was a four-time AFCA FCS Regional Coach of the Year, a four-time Big Sky Coach of the Year, and a three-time finalist for the Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year Award.
Â
Under Hauck, the Grizzlies achieved excellence both on the field and in the classroom. Since his return to UM in 2018 Hauck's Grizzlies posted the highest grade point averages in program history, averaging over a 3.0 GPA or better for 15-consecutive semesters. In that time the Griz have had a conference-high 243 Academic All-Big Sky honorees. A conference-high seven Grizzlies have also been named Academic All-American.
Â
Respected by his peers, he recently concluded his tenure as President of the American Football Coaches Association.
Â
Montana wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy has been named head coach and will oversee operations of the program going forward.
