Idaho raced out to a 20-2 lead and led wire-to-wire on Saturday afternoon as the Big Sky Conference-leading Vandals handed the Montana women's basketball team an 89-65 defeat at ICCU Arena in Moscow.
The Lady Griz (7-16, 4-8 BSC) fought back to within seven points in the second quarter and trailed by nine at the half, but Idaho (19-5, 10-1 BSC) shot 17 for 27 (.630) in the second half to pull away, its 89 points the second-most the Vandals have ever scored on Montana.
"You've got to give Idaho a lot of credit. They played with a lot of energy and started great," said Lady Griz coach Nate Harris. "That was the probably the biggest thing. You look up at the scoreboard and it's 20-2."
Montana, per usual, used the 3-point shot to work its way back into the game. Kennedy Gillette hit a pair of threes late in the first quarter, with Draya Wacker, making her first career start, and Mack Konig also connecting.
The Lady Griz trailed 26-16 after 10 minutes and pulled within seven, 32-25, on another Gillette 3-pointer midway through the second quarter. Rae Ehrman scored the final five points of the first half to bring Montana within nine, 44-35, at the break.
"Proud of our kids for fighting back for the remainder of the first quarter and into halftime," said Harris.
Idaho opened the second half by scoring seven straight points. The Vandals would shoot 7 for 12 in the third quarter, 10 for 15 in the fourth.
"Came out the second half and again we were a little bit sluggish to start, then the fourth quarter they kind of got on top of us, made every shot down the stretch," said Harris.
Konig, just 3 for 16 in her first two games back from injury, got the start on Saturday and looked like her former self, putting up 28 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She went 4 for 5 from the 3-point line, 8 for 8 from the free throw line.
"Mack was really aggressive. When we got her into the right actions, she was really, really good," said Harris. "It was nice to see her hit some shots and get to the free throw line. She did some really good things offensively."
Gillette hit a season-high four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points, Ehrman added 10 off the bench for Montana, which was playing without 22-game starter Macy Donarski. Avery Waddington had seven rebounds and four assists.
Idaho, which shot 53.8 percent, the highest allowed by Montana since South Dakota State shot 56.1 percent in November, had six players in double figures, with Hope Hassmann totaling 19 points and seven assists.
Idaho out-rebounded Montana 47-21 and out-scored the Lady Griz 60-16 in the paint. "You get out-rebounded by 26, you give up 60 points in the paint, it's going to be really, really difficult to score enough to win," said Harris.
Montana will host Montana State (17-6, 10-2 BSC) next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Missoula. The Bobcats, who lost in overtime at Idaho on Thursday night, got past Eastern Washington 71-69 on Saturday.
