Kensey Gault set a new personal record in the heptathlon this week at the Bryan Clay Multis in Azusa, California, scoring 4,613 to finish in 9th place in Group D. She had three PRs in the seven events for the best score of her two-year career.
Â
Gault opened Thursday with back-to-back finishes outside of the top 10 in the first two events of the day. She ran a time of 15.66 in the 100m hurdles to finish 10th and then slid down the multi table with the second event, tying for 12th with a high jump mark of 4-11.
Â
The sophomore started making up ground during the second half of Thursday's competition with a couple of lifetime bests in the shot put and 200m.
Â
Gault's third and final throw in the shot put was a huge PR of 36-11, which was good enough for 6th place in the event and brought her back inside the top 10 overall.
Â
In the 200m, Gault ran in a very fast heat to finish 4th overall with a time of 25.24. The time was nearly a half-second faster than her previous best time and moved her all the way up to 5th place in the heptathlon after the first day of competition.
Â
On Friday, Gault began her competition with the long jump. She had her best jump on the final attempt, going 17-3.5 to finish 9th in the event. She followed it up with a 14th place finish in the javelin with a throw of 72-1.
Â
Gault wrapped up the competition with a PR in the 800m with a time of 2:21.84. It was her best finish in all seven events as she finished 2nd of the 16 athletes.
Â
The Griz will return to action next week with a group of athletes returning back to California. Montana is competing in the Pacific Coast Invitational and the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State starting on April 16.
