His prep football teams won state championships in 2009, 2010, and 2012, going 13-0 each year. His senior year he had 38 tackles, including seven stops for loss. He had 18 punt returns for a 19.2-yard average his senior year. As a junior he had 13 pass deflections, two picks, and scored two touchdowns via kickoff returns. He was an all-state selection at defensive back and at returner as a junior and senior. He was a three-year letterman in football and earned four in track and field. He prepped at the same school as Griz senior safety Matt Hermanson, and his coach there was Matt's dad, Brian Hermanson.
