2021 marks veteran mentor Chad Germer’s seventh year coaching the offensive line at his alma mater and his twenty-fourth overall season coaching college football.
Germer (pronounced “JUR-mur”) came back to Montana from UNLV in 2015, where he coached under Bobby Hauck for five seasons (2010-14). He returned to Montana and coached for one season in 2009 and joined Hauck’s staff the following year at UNLV.
In his first season back at Montana in 2015, he coached offensive tackle John Schmaing to a place on the second team All-Big Sky Conference squad. In 2016, Germer coached O-linemen to All-Big Sky honors, with David Reese, Jackson Thiebes and Devon Dietrich each earning accolades. In 2017, Reese became a two-time All-Big Sky honoree as UM’s only player named to the first team.
At UNLV, he coached second team All-Mountain West honoree and four-year starter Brett Boyko, who became the first Rebel offensive lineman to be honored by the league since 2004. Boyko was invited to play in the 90th East-West Shrine game, Jan. 17, 2015, and has enjoyed a long professional career.
He also coached three-time honorable mention all-league center and Rimington Trophy Watch List selection Robert Waterman at UNLV.
Germer’s lines helped produce the school’s all-time leading rusher as Tim Cornett finished with 3,733 yards, which is also the second-most in conference history.
Prior to taking the position at UNLV, Germer spent six seasons coaching the offensive line at the University of Wyoming from 2003-08, working for former Griz head man Joe Glenn.
He began his coaching career at Montana as a restricted earnings coach in 1998 and was elevated to full-time status the following season. He coached for the Grizzlies from 1998-2002.
At Montana, his lines opened up holes for standout running back Chase Reynolds who rushed for 1,502 yards and 22 touchdowns and was a second team All-America pick in 2009 as a senior. That season the Grizzlies ranked 18th in the FCS in fewest quarterback sacks allowed.
A 1991 All-America center at Montana, he began his coaching career at his alma mater and went on to coach four All-Americans during his first stint at UM, which lasted five years.
His son Nick is currently a freshman receiver on the Grizzly football team.
