MONTANA: Matt will start for the third season in a row. He is Montana's leading returning tackler as a senior. He begins his senior year ranked 29th in school history with 239 career tackles.
2013: He was second on the team with 107 tackles, in solo stops with 53, in forced fumbles (tie) with three, and in fumble recoveries with two. He was ranked 13th in the Big Sky Conference with 8.9 tackles a game, which ranked him 51st in the FCS. He was a second team all-league selection.
2012: He started in 10 games (he missed the Southern Utah game because of an injury) and was fourth on the team with 67 tackles, and tied for the team lead with two interceptions. He was an honorable mention All-Big Sky pick.
2011: He played in 13 games and started in one (Northern Colorado) as a true freshman. He was fifth on the team with 65 tackles, and tied with two other players with a team-leading three interceptions.
HIGH SCHOOL: His senior season at Washington High School he led his team to a second straight 13-0 season and state championship. As a senior he passed for 1,400 yards and 21 touchdowns, and rushed for 600 yards and six TDs, and had 76 tackles and four interceptions. His junior and senior seasons on defense he had combined 140 tackles and 11 picks. His prep football coach was his dad, Brian Hermanson. He earned 11 letters: four each in football and track and three in basketball. He was a three-time all-state pick in football, and his state's Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior, and tabbed football MVP on defense as a junior and senior. He served as a team captain in football and in hoops his senior year.
CAREER HIGHS: He had a career-high 18 tackles in UM's 21-14 home win over Cal Poly last season. He had 10 solo stops (and 14 total tackles) and two forced fumbles at Sacramento State a year ago. He returned a fumble recovery for a 35-yard touchdown in UM's 31-27 come-from-behind win at South Dakota last season. He has had 10 or more tackles in six games, including four in 2013.
