MONTANA: Tonga will be starting for the third consecutive season in 2014. He was chosen a co-captain in defense, sharing that job with senior defensive end Zack Wagenmann. He is the Grizzlies' eighth leading returning tackler.
2013: He started in 11 contests (he missed the Appalachian State and Cal Poly games because of an injury), and was UM's 14th leading tackler with 32 stops. He was a third team All-Big Sky Conference selection.
2012: He was the Grizzlies' 12th (tie) leading tackler with 30 stops. He led the team with two fumble recoveries. He was an honorable mention All-Big Sky pick.
2011: He played in eight games and lettered.
2010: He was a redshirt.
HIGH SCHOOL: Takai (pronounced Tuhk-eye) was chosen first team all-conference and honorable mention all-state at Damien Memorial High School as a senior. He earned 10 letters in five different sports: football (3), track and field (4), wrestling (1), canoe paddling (1), and judo (1). He was awarded the "Lineman Award" as a senior. He was also tabbed the recipient of his school's Field Athlete of the Year Award in track. He served as a team captain in football as a senior. His high school football coach was Panahou Aina.
CAREER HIGHS: He had six tackles (five unassisted) at Northern Arizona last season. He had a sack and two quarterback hurries at North Dakota a year ago. He recovered fumbles in the South Dakota and Weber State games in 2012.
PERSONAL: He is a sociology major. His parents are Vivieni and Ilisapeti Takai of Honolulu. Birth date: November 29, 1992.
