The 2022 season is Paul Reneau’s sixth year as a full-time member of the Montana track & field coaching staff. He previously spent three years working with the program as a volunteer assistant, which began during the 2013-14 academic year.
Reneau works with Montana’s sprinters and relay teams, and has coached his athletes to multiple NCAA regional appearances, Big Sky Conference championships, and school records. In May 2019, a quartet consisting of three freshmen and his son, Sterling, set a Montana school record in the 4x400-meter relay (3:09.69) while winning a Big Sky Conference championship. The anchor, Xavier Melice, was named the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year. In May 2021, another member from the relay team, Cade Johnstone, reached the podium twice at the Big Sky Conference outdoor championships, winning a title in the 400 meters and finishing third in the 200 meters. Johnstone's 400-meters time set a school record and qualified him for NCAA regionals.
Other sprinters who have advanced to NCAA regionals under Reneau's guidance include Alex Mustard (200 meters in 2017) and Sterling Reneau (400 meters in 2017).
In February 2020, at the Big Sky Conference outdoor championships, Montana's 4x400-meter relay team was again atop the podium, as it was in 2017 as well.
Reneau has earned USATF Level 1, 2 and 3 certifications in the sprints, hurdles and relays and recently received his IAAF Level 5 endorsement.
A native of Belize who grew up in Los Angeles, he played football and ran track for the Grizzlies in the early 1980s. He finished fifth in the 100 meters at the 1984 Big Sky Conference outdoor championships in a time of 10.79.
He later represented his home country of Belize in a pair of Olympic Games. Reneau competed in the 100 meters at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, racing against eventual gold medalist Carl Lewis in an opening heat, and as a velodrome cyclist at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
Reneau was employed by Western Montana Mental Health Center and worked as a counselor within the Missoula County Public Schools system from 1993 until 2016, when he joined Montana’s staff on a full-time basis.
He spent more than a decade coaching middle school sports in Missoula and seven years coaching track & field at Frenchtown High School, five as the program’s head coach.
Reneau, who earned a degree in social work from Montana in 1984, and his wife, Carla, have two sons, Zane and Sterling, a two-time Big Sky champion and 4x400-meter record-holder. In September 2020, Reneau was named to Montana's inaugural Athletics Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
