The 2024-25 season is Joslyn Tinkle’s fourth year as an assistant coach at Montana, her second as recruiting coordinator.
She was hired in June 2021 after playing four years at Stanford, four years professionally and working five years in the private sector.
In Tinkle’s first year on staff, 2021-22, Montana had a seven-win improvement from the previous season.
It was Year 3 when the Lady Griz truly broke out, winning 23 games, advancing to the WNIT and winning a game in a national postseason tournament for the first time since 2014.
Montana went 23-10, finished third in the Big Sky, won a game in the Big Sky tournament for the first time since 2018 and defeated Boise State 92-66 in the first round of the WNIT.
The Lady Griz, who ranked second nationally in 3-point field goals (10.8/g), ended the season with a NET ranking of 98.
Born in Sweden, where her dad, Wayne, was playing professionally, Tinkle was the Gatorade Montana Player of the Year as a junior and senior at Big Sky High in Missoula, where she led the Eagles to back-to-back Class AA state championships.
She was a McDonald’s All-American as a senior and a member of the U.S. U18 national team that won gold in 2008 at the FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina.
She played four years at Stanford on teams that went 137-10 under coach Tara VanDerveer and advanced to three Final Fours. The Cardinal went 71-1 in Pac-10/12 games and won four league tournament titles.
Tinkle, a starter her final two seasons as a Cardinal, was voted first-team All-Pac-12 as a senior when she averaged 11.8 points and 5.7 rebounds.
She finished her career with 1,091 points, 604 rebounds and 150 blocks, and earned a degree as a double major in sociology and communications in 2013.
Tinkle played for the Seattle Storm of the WNBA in 2013, then played for Uni Gyor in Hungary in the EuroLeague in 2013-14.
She would play for Canik Belediyesi in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League in 2014-15, the Sydney Uni Flames in Australia’s National Women’s Basketball League in 2015-16.
Tinkle’s dad was an assistant coach at Montana, his alma mater, for four years before being promoted to head coach prior to the 2006-07 season. He led the Grizzlies to 158 wins over eight seasons and to three NCAA tournament appearances.
He is currently the head coach at Oregon State, where he was hired prior to the 2014-15 season. He coached the Beavers to the Elite Eight at the 2021 NCAA tournament.
Tinkle was a two-time All-Big Sky Conference selection at Montana, where he scored 1,500 points. He was inducted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
He is married to Lisa McLeod, who was a three-time all-region selection for the Lady Griz basketball team and was voted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. She finished her career with 1,470 points, 830 rebounds.
Tinkle’s younger sister, Elle, played at Gonzaga. Her younger brother, Tres, played at Oregon State.
