The 2020-21 season is Nate Covill’s second year as an assistant coach at Montana.
He joined the staff in August 2019 after working the previous three seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program at Willamette University, a Division III school in Salem, Ore.
In Covill’s first year at Montana, the Lady Griz won 17 games, the most for the program since the 2015-16 season.
Originally from Long Beach, Calif., Covill played basketball at Montana in the early 1990s. He averaged 6.6 points and 4.7 rebounds as a senior in 1995-96.
The Grizzlies advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1991-92, when Covill was in his first year in the program, the NIT in 1994-95, when he was a redshirt junior.
Covill, who graduated from Montana with a degree in elementary education in 1998, previously taught in Southern California and coached boys’ basketball at Martin Luther King High from 1999-2008.
The Wolves won the 2002 CIF Division 2 state championship and the 2008 CIF Division IAA Southern Section title. Both years they earned a spot in the top 25 in the USA Today national rankings.
Covill, who worked as a special education case manager for the Redmond (Ore.) School District from 2008-16, was the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Redmond High for one season, the school’s head girls coach for three and the head boys coach at Ridgeview High for four.
Covill is married to the former Angella Bieber, who played for the Lady Griz from 1994-95 to 1997-98.
She was a member of Robin Selvig-coached teams that won 99 games over four seasons and four times advanced to the NCAA Tournament. She was voted the Big Sky’s Outstanding Sixth Player as a junior, the Big Sky tournament MVP as a senior.
The Covills have two daughters, Austin and Alex.
