Lady Griz Down Deja Vu 73-67

The University of Montana women's basketball team rallied from an early 10-point deficit to defeat D??j?? Vu 73-67 Sunday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena.
D??j?? Vu, a team comprised of former Lady Griz players, was hot to start the game as they raced out to a 17-7 lead with 13:05 left in the first half. Ann Lake-Rausch led the rally with five of her 10 points.
But Montana steadily chipped away at the deficit. Trailing 29-22 with 5:40 left in the half, the Lady Griz went on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to one at 32-31. Laura Valley sparked the rally with four points. D??j?? Vu took a 36-34 lead into the lockerroom.
Hollie Tyler gave the Lady Griz the lead for good at the outset of the second half. Tyler, a 6-foot-3 freshman center, scored the first seven points of the second half, including a 3-point basket, to give Montana a 41-36 lead with 17:02 left in the game.
The Lady Griz gradually wore down D??j?? Vu and increased their lead. With a 52-47 lead, Montana went on a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the contest, 61-47. Julie Deming scored five points in the rally. The closest D??j?? Vu would get the rest of the game was six points on three occasions.
"This was a great game to learn from, and it was nice to win it," UM head coach Robin Selvig said. "I told our team before the game that if we didn't play well we wouldn't win. This was a good win against a good team."
Valley, who came off the bench, played a solid game at both ends of the court. She was 4-for-6 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line to finish with a team-high 16 points. She also added six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
"Laura played a nice game," Selvig said. "She made her free throws and she was going to the boards and getting rebounds. She even took her time and made some nice shots. She did what you need to do when you're a senior."
Tyler finished with her second strong game in the exhibition season. She scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with 2 blocks, an assist and a steal. She was also 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Julie Deming was the third Lady Griz player in double figures with 11 points.
Marti Leibenguth lead D??j?? Vu with 17 points, but she scored only six points in the second half. Krista Redpath scored 11 points, while Lake-Rausch and Jeanne McNulty-King added 10 points apiece.
Montana opens the 2001-02 regular season this weekend at the Texas-Pan American Classic. The Lady Griz play Southeast Missouri State on Friday at 4 p.m. (MST). UM will play either Arkansas-Little Rock or Texas-Pan American on Saturday.
