University of Montana women's basketball player Hollie Tyler has been named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for her efforts last week against Weber State and Idaho State. She is the first Lady Griz to receive the award this season.
Tyler, a 6-foot-3 freshman center from Leadore, Idaho, averaged 16.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in leading the Lady Griz to a pair of road victories. Montana defeated Weber State 76-59 and Idaho State 72-61. Tyler shot 54.2 percent from the field (13-for-24) and added four assists and three steals.
Against Weber State, Tyler matched her career highs with 21 points and three steals to go along with four rebounds. She made a career-high 10 field goals on 16 attempts. She scored 19 of her points in the second half as she sank nine of 11 field goal attempts. She followed that effort with a 12-point, 8-rebound performance against Idaho State. It was her 12th double-figure scoring game of the season.
Tyler also played well defensively, teaming with fellow center Crystal Baird to contain three of the top post players in the league -- Crystal Howe of Weber State and Mandi Carver and Ashley Toner of Idaho State. Howe managed 14 points and eight rebounds, right at her season average, while Carver had 15 points and 10 rebounds, both of which were below her season averages. Toner, meanwhile, scored 12 points and grabbed only one rebound.
"Hollie had a strong weekend for us," UM head coach Robin Selvig said. "She had a big second half against Weber State. She continues to improve each week. Both Hollie and Crystal did a nice job defensively for us last week. It was important for us to see how they would do defensively and they did a nice job."
Montana, now 12-5 overall, is alone atop the Big Sky Conference standings with a 4-0 league record. The Lady Griz play host to Northern Arizona on Friday and Sacramento State on Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:35 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena.
