Three basketball standouts at Montana high schools have signed national letters of intent to attend the University of Montana and play basketball for the Lady Griz, UM head coach Robin Selvig announced today. The trio includes Amy Brooks of Helena, Mont., Michela Schmitz of Great Falls, Mont., and Laura Cote of Yellowstone National Park, Wyo.
"We are very excited about these three young ladies," Selvig said. "All three of them are extremely talented basketball players. They are dedicated athletes and outstanding students. That's what we're looking for."
Brooks is a 6-foot-1 power forward at Helena High School. A two-time first team all-conference and all-state selection, Brooks ranked in the top 10 in Class AA in five statistical categories last season as she helped the Bengals to a third-place finish at the state tournament. During the regular season, she averaged 14.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. She was third in the state in field goal percentage, making 58.7 percent of her attempts. As a sophomore, she averaged 11.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
"Amy has tremendous size and strength to be a force around the basket, but she also possesses good perimeter skills for a player with her size," Selvig said. "Her intensity and aggressiveness also stand out. She gets after it every second she's on the court."
Schmitz is a 5-8 guard at Great Falls High School. Last season as a junior, she led Class AA in scoring, averaging 19 points per game. She also averaged 5.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game while helping the Bison to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament. She was named her team's Most Valuable Player and was a first team all-conference and all-state selection.
"When I think of her, I think of a basketball junkie," Selvig said. "She spends a lot of time in the gym. She led Class AA in scoring last year, but she also has good ball handling skills. We're looking at her as a point guard who can score as well. She's a very intelligent player."
Cote is a 5-8 guard at Gardiner High School in Gardiner, Mont. A two-time all-conference selection, she earned all-state honors last year as a junior after averaging 16.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.8 steals per game. A 75 percent free throw shooter, she made 56 percent of her 2-point field goal attempts. She helped lead the Bruins to an 18-9 record and a third-place finish at the Class C Divisional Tournament.
"We had the good fortune of seeing Laura at our summer basketball camps, and she caught my eye," said Selvig. "I'd heard a little bit about her from some coaches, but not that much. She is a very skilled player who is very intense. She is a good shooter and has a lot of athletic ability. She has a chance to be a great player at this level."
Selvig said he does not anticipate signing any other players during the early signing period or during the spring signing period.
