Griz hoopsters drop season opener to Panthers

Freshman guard Ben Jacobson scored 22 points off the bench, as the University of Northern Iowa Panthers spoiled the home and season opener for The University of Montana Grizzlies, defeating them 77-71 Friday evening in UM's Adams Center/Dahlberg Arena.
The teams traded leads several times in the second half, and the Panthers took the lead for good with 5:00 minutes left on a lay-up by junior center David Gruber.
The Grizzlies had overcome a 7-point (57-50) second half deficit, when freshman guard Kevin Criswell scored on a driving lay-up to tie it at 61-all with 5:31 remaining.
But, UNI's Gruber then scored the go-ahead bucket, and the Panthers never trailed again. UM had lead 33-29 at halftime.
Griz senior guard David Bell tied his career-high with 26 points, while junior forward Steve Horne added 15 points and 12 rebounds.
UNI's Gruber had 18 points and 18 rebounds, while forward Matt Schneiderman added 16 points and 7 boards.
Montana hosts the University of Denver next Tuesday, November 26. UNI hosts Wayne State of Nebraska next Monday, Nov. 25.
