The University of Montana basketball program has signed another top-notch junior college player to a National Letter of Intent, announced UM Head Coach Pat Kennedy.
Jon Wilkins, a 6-5, 215-pound guard-forward from Northeastern Colorado Junior College in Sterling, Colo., will play basketball for the Griz next season.
"You don't always want to call a player a sleeper, but Jon is the consummate sleeper," Kennedy said. "He has three years of eligibility. He can play the two or three. He's a great kid who works extremely hard in the classroom and on the court. He comes from an outstanding family, and he possesses a great work ethic. He is a superior athlete who can compete with anyone."
Last season as a freshman, Wilkins averaged 10.0 points and 4.5 rebounds a game for a 26-7 Northeastern Colorado JC team that lost to Sheridan Junior College in the Region 9 championship game.
This season Wilkins is redshirting after undergoing knee surgery in mid-June. He injured his knee playing in a pick-up basketball game on campus. He will have three years of eligibility at UM.
"Montana was the best situation for me," Davis said in a telephone interview Friday.
"(UM assistant) Coach Dean did a great job recruiting me, and it will be exciting playing for a head coach with Pat Kennedy's background."
Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Wilkins attended Hamilton High School there, and he was a two-time all-state selection as a prep.
Wilkins joins recent junior college signees Kamaar Davis (6-7, 235 from Sheridan JC in Wyoming) and Roy Booker (a 6 2 guard from Allen County Community College in Iola, Kansas), as well as 6-10 center John Seyfert (Sigh-fert), from Stevensville, Montana, who transferred to UM from St. Louis University.
