Despite a career-high 15 points from Crystal Baird and Hollie Tyler's fourth double-double of the season, The University of Montana fell to the University of Oregon 65-60 Thursday night at Dahlberg Arena.
Baird and Tyler, a pair of 6-foot-3 sophomore centers, gave the Lady Griz (6-2) a strong presence in the low post the entire game. Tyler, the team's starting center, was 7-for-17 from the field and also blocked three shots. Baird, meanwhile, came off the bench to sink 6 of 10 shots from the field.
"We got the ball inside really well early on," said UM head coach Robin Selvig. "We were able to get the ball down low and get some good looks."
Tyler and Baird were particularly effective early in the game. With UM trailing 6-4, Tyler scored three straight baskets and Baird added another as the Lady Griz went on an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 15-6 with 12 minutes left in the first half.
That's when Oregon's Cathrine Kraayeveld took over, scoring the Ducks' next 13 points to pull Oregon to within three at 22-19. Moments later, Kedzie Gunderson capped a 10-2 run for Oregon and knot the score at 24-24.
Oregon, which trailed 30-29 at halftime, took its first lead since 6-4 by outscoring Montana 7-4 over the first four minutes of the second half to take a 36-34 lead.
The second half was close the rest of the way, with neither team taking more than a four-point lead until the very end of the contest. With Oregon clinging to a 57-56 lead, UM's Brooklynn Lorenzen sank a 15-foot jumper to put Montana ahead for the last time at 58-57 with 2:28 to play.
Oregon grabbed the momentum on its next two possessions. Carolyn Ganes converted a basket down low and Kayla Steen drove the lane for another bucket to put the Ducks ahead 61-58 with 1:33 remaining. Montana could not convert on its next three possessions, while Steen and Alissa Edwards sank two free throws apiece to give Oregon a 65-58 lead with 13 seconds to play.
Despite the loss, Selvig remained upbeat about his squad's season.
"We've got a very young team," Selvig said. "Like I told the team, we're 6-2 and that's a good record here at the turn. This one hurts a little bit, but our goal is to get better, and we can build upon this game."
Kraayeveld led all scorers with 18 points to go along with a career-high 22 rebounds. Steen added 14 points for the Ducks.
Lorenzen finished with a season-high eight points along with five assists for the Lady Griz.
Montana is off now until it hosts the 23rd Annual Lady Griz Holiday Classic on December 28-29. The Lady Griz take on Texas-Pan American at 8 p.m. on December 28. Utah and 14th-rated Mississippi State kick off the tournament at 6 p.m. The consolation game is at 6 p.m. on December 29, followed by the championship game at 8 p.m.
