Simarron Schildt and Hollie Tyler came off the bench to combine for 38 points and 18 rebounds to lead the University of Montana to a 74-61 victory over Idaho State University Friday night at Dahlberg Arena.
Tyler, a 6-foot-3 freshman center, matched her career-high with 21 points for her seventh 20-point game of the season. She did most of her damage in the second half, tallying 15 points after the break. Meanwhile, Schildt, a 6-foot senior, scored a career-high 17 points, including 10 in the second half. Both players were 2-for-2 from 3-point range.
Montana (17-6, 9-1 Big Sky) trailed 7-4 early in the game before going on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good at 15-7 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. The Lady Griz twice led by 10 points before settling for a 31-23 halftime lead.
Idaho State (9-14, 2-8 Big Sky) stayed within eight points midway through the second half before going into a dry spell shooting. The Bengals went 9:30 without a field goal, but they made up for it by making all 12 free throws during that stretch.
Montana grabbed its largest lead of the game at 16 points with 4:30 left in the game. After leading 48-40, the Lady Griz put together a 12-4 rally to take a 60-44 advantage. Tyler led the charge with eight points.
"This was a knock down, drag out kind of affair," UM head coach Robin Selvig said. "I figured it would be a tough game, and it was a tough game. I thought we played real well, particularly in the second half. Simarron had an absolutely fabulous night in all aspects."
Julie Deming was the third Lady Griz in double figures with 15 points.
Ashley Toner paced Idaho State with 14 points, while Cassie Bro and Mandi Carver added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Carver, last year's Big Sky MVP, struggled offensively. She missed her first 11 shots from the field before finishing 1-for-12.
Carver did grab 11 rebounds to become the Big Sky Conference's career rebounding leader. She now has 1,053 rebounds, surpassing Eastern Washington's Brenda Souther (1983-87), who grabbed 1,045 rebounds.
Montana plays its final regular season home game Saturday night against Weber State. Tip off is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena.
