Weber State University rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final 14 minutes of the game to defeat the University of Montana 58-53 Saturday night at Dahlberg Arena.
With the win, Weber State (9-6, 1-1 Big Sky) became the first Big Sky opponent to win in Missoula in consecutive seasons. Montana is now 137-5 against conference foes in Dahlberg Arena.
Montana, which led 26-21 at halftime, gradually pushed its lead to 39-31 in the first six minutes of the second half. Brooklynn Lorenzen helped the Lady Griz outscore the Wildcats 13-10 over that span. Lorenzen, a junior point guard, knocked down three 3-pointers, and sophomore Hollie Tyler scored twice in the post to help Montana gain its largest lead of the game.
However, Weber State rallied. In the next four minutes, WSU scored seven straight points during a 12-3 run to take a 43-42 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.
Katie Edwards gave UM (10-5, 1-1 Big Sky) the lead again at 44-43 with 9:50 remaining, but that would be Montana's only field goal during a 7:43 dry spell.
With just over a minute on the clock, Weber State's Crystal Howe put in an offensive rebound and drew a foul on Tyler. Howe made the free throw to give the visitors a 52-48 lead with 1:14 to play.
Edwards answered with a 3-pointer to pull the Lady Griz to within one, 52-51, with 1:03 left, but the Wildcats were six-for-six from the free throw line in the final minute to preserve the victory.
"It was a hard-fought battle," UM head coach Robin Selvig said. "We had the lead and things seemed to be going our way, but they were able to come back and take the lead. I thought that was a key point in the game. That shifted the momentum. Then we couldn't seem to find a break late in the game. But it was a good game. Both teams played very hard."
Tyler paced Montana with 16 points and 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Lorenzen was next with a season-high 14 points, including a career-high four 3-pointers. Edwards came off the bench to finish with 10 points.
WSU's Julie Gjertsen led all scorers with 20 points. Crystal Howe joined her double figures with 15 points, including 13 points in the second half, all of which came in the final 13:06 of the contest.
Montana will be on the road next week as the Lady Griz travel to Bozeman, Mont., to take on Montana State Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
