MISSOULA, Mont. - University of Montana men's basketball player Mike Chavez, a native of Browning, Mont., has withdrawn from school and left the program for personal reasons, coach Pat Kennedy announced today.
Chavez, who would have been a sophomore this season, was a key contributor to the Grizzly program as a freshman in 2002-03. The 6-7 forward played in 23 of Montana's 30 games, getting six starts. Chavez averaged 4.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game and was one of the team's best shooters, shooting 56.1 percent from the field, 62.5 percent from 3-point range and 80.0 percent from the free throw line.
"We have supported Mike in this decision and wish him the very best," Kennedy said. "Mike is certainly a fine young man whose potential as a productive citizen and a basketball player is great."
The Grizzlies open practice on Saturday, Oct. 18, and have been selected as the Big Sky Conference's top team by some preseason publications.
