On a cold Halloween afternoon at South Campus Stadium, the Big Sky Tournament hopes of the Montana Grizzly soccer team was dealt a serious blow, as Portland State earned a 1-0, double-overtime win.
Roughly 100 nearly frozen fans, which were vocal throughout most of the match despite the game-time temperature hovering around 25 degrees, were silenced in the 107 minute of play by Viking forward Katie Schoene's goal. Schoene was out in front of the Grizzly net on the right side and kicked in the game-winning goal after Jamie Blakesley's shot bounced off the left-side goal post and to her feet.
Montana fell to 2-3 in Big Sky play, while Portland State improved to 2-2-1 in the conference. The loss puts Montana in a must win position Sunday, when the Griz host visiting Sacramento State at 1 p.m. at South Campus Stadium to finish regular season play. Even with a win over Sacramento State, Montana would still need Eastern Washington to at least tie Portland State on Sunday afternoon as well to go to the Big Sky Tournament. Montana has never missed the Big Sky Tournament in team history.
Montana was outshot by Portland State 17-8, and the Vikings held the edge in corner kicks as well, 7-5.
