MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Montana Lady Griz hit their first six shots of the game and shot 51.5 percent from the field overall to defeat Deja Vu, 89-73, in Montana's final exhibition game of the preseason. Senior Julie Deming hit 10 of 14 shots to finish with a team-high 24 points to lead the Lady Griz, who had to overcome Skyla Sisco's game-high 30 points.
Unlike Wednesday night's exhibition game against Strakonice, when the offense was slow to get going for UM, Sunday afternoon the Lady Griz had 25 points less than nine minutes into the game to jump out to a quick 14-point lead, 25-11.
The first-half lead grew as large as 16 points twice before Deja Vu cut the lead to nine at the half, 43-34, by scoring the final five points of the period.
Sisco had 16 first-half points to lead Deja Vu. Deming had 11 and senior Brooklynn Lorenzen scored seven points and dished out seven assists in the first 20 minutes.
A layup by Greta (Koss) Buehler 16 seconds into the second half brought Deja Vu within seven, 43-36. The Lady Griz lead hovered between seven and 12 points the opening 13 minutes of the second half, but two baskets by junior Hollie Tyler, who finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks, put Montana up by 17, 75-58, and the Lady Griz kept their double-figure lead the rest of the way.
Joining Deming and Tyler with double figures was freshman Jackie DeShazer, who hit two 3-point shots and all four of her free throw attempts to finish with 10 points.
Lorenzen had 12 assists for the game against just one turnover. The 5-5 point guard also had seven points, two rebounds and two steals.
Sophomore Jody McLeod had a solid effort in a starting role, finishing with seven points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Freshman Amy Brooks had eight points and six rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.
Montana shot 54.5 percent in the opening half and 48.5 percent in the second half to finish at 51.5 percent for the game. Deja Vu shot 38.8 percent.
The Lady Griz outrebounded Deja Vu, 47-33, and 27 of UM's 34 field goals came off of assists.
In addition to Sisco's 30 points, Buehler had a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Sherri (Brooks) McWilliams had nine points and Linda Weyler added eight.
