Montana Dominates Orangewomen in Wahine Classic Opener

Honolulu, Hawaii - The University of Montana Lady Griz had four double-figure scorers and limited Syracuse, a team that lives and dies with the 3-point shot, to 9 for 31 shooting from beyond the arc to roll to a convincing 65-55 win in the opening round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic Friday night.
Montana will face Hartford at 3:20 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (6:20 MST) in one semifinal. The Hawks were a 79-76 overtime winner over host Hawaii in one semifinal game.
In other first-round games, No. 2 Texas whipped Navy, 97-46, and Virginia beat No. 18 Arizona, 70-65.
Montana's tough matchup zone gave the Orangewomen and their perimeter game problems from the start Friday night. Jill Norton hit Syracuse's first 3-point attempt with less than a minute gone by to give SU an early 3-2 lead, but it would be the Big East team's only lead of the game.
Syracuse hit 5 of 19 3-point shots in the opening 20 minutes, 26.3 percent, and 7 of 28 overall in the first half, 25.0 percent.
Montana, which improved to 2-0, took its first double-figure lead with 12:14 to play in the first half, 19-8, on a senior Julie Deming jumper and never led by fewer than 10 the rest of the way.
The Lady Griz held a 39-20 halftime lead and led by at least 18 points for the majority of the second half.
Syracuse scored the final 11 points of the game to close to within 10 at the final buzzer.
Junior Hollie Tyler led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Deming had 14 points and six rebounds and sophomore Jody McLeod had 10 points, hitting 5 of 7 shots, and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Senior Brooklynn Lorenzen had another flawless game at the point, scoring 10 points and dishing out eight assists with no turnovers in 29 minutes of action. The 5-5 guard now has 16 assists against just one turnover in Montana's opening two games.
Eight UM players scored in the game and all ten players who saw action played at least 11 minutes.
Montana's zone held Syracuse's high-scoring Julie McBride to six points on 2 of 9 shooting. The Orangewomen's point guard had scored 35 and 30 points in SU's two opening wins.
Montana had just eight turnovers in the game, while forcing 13 Orangewomen turnovers.
The Lady Griz shot 42.6 percent to SU's 33.3 percent and held a 43-35 rebounding advantage.
