Jackson State drops Griz, 71-64

Senior guard Ishmael Joyce scored 30 points to lead the visiting Jackson State Tigers to a 71-64 non-league victory over The University of Montana Grizzlies Tuesday evening in front of 3,206 fans in UM's Adams Center/Dahlberg Arena.
The Tigers (2-3) took a 30-25 halftime lead, but the Grizzlies (3-6) came storming back in the early minutes of the second stanza. Montana sophomore guard Kevin Criswell hit his first shot of the game, a three-pointer with 17:20 remaining to give his team its first lead (34-31) of the game.
The teams then traded the lead a couple of times, and with the game knotted at 49-all, senior guard K.C. Cavette scored on a lay-up to give the Tigers a 51-49 lead with 9:30 to go, and JSU never trailed again.
Montana made it 61-60 with 3:00 left on a pair of free throws by junior forward Kamarr Davis. The Tigers made 6-of-10 free throws and grabbed a couple of crucial offensive rebounds in the final 37 seconds to thwart a Montana comeback.
Joyce made 12-of-13 free throws in the second half when he scored 19 of his 30 points. Senior center Leonard Taylor added 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Tigers, while Cavette had 10 points.
Junior guard Roy Booker led the Grizzlies with 14 points off the bench. Senior forward Victor Venters was UM's only other double-figure scorer with 10 points, also off the bench.
Davis, UM's leading scorer, had 7 points on 1-of-6 shooting. Criswell, the Grizzlies' second leading scorer, had 8 points on 2-of-12 shooting (2-of-10 three-point attempts), but he had a team-high 7 rebounds.
Montana made 20-of-57 shots from the field (35.1%), 7-of-22 treys (31.8%), and was out-rebounded 46-34. JSU was 22-of-55 (40.0%) from the field, and was 3-of-13 (23.1%) from
trey land. The Tigers made 24-of-32 free throws (75.0%), while the Griz made 17-of-25 for 68.0%.
Montana, which has now lost five games in a row, plays at Southern Illinois (7-0) in Carbondale on Sunday, December 21. JSU, which is in the middle of nine straight road games, is at Utah State in Logan on Thursday, December 18.
