Griz hoops tops UM Western in final exhibition game

Senior forward Kamarr Davis scored 31 points to lead the way, as the host University of Montana Grizzlies defeated the UM-Western Bulldogs 89-68 Friday evening in an exhibition basketball game in UM's Adams Center/Dahlberg Arena in front of 3,040 fans.
"We didn't turn the ball over a lot, but we need to improve as passers," said Griz head coach Larry Krystkowiak. "We'll be ready when we get pressed."
The visitors from Dillon took an opening 2-0 lead on a jump shot by junior guard Derek Hibbert. The Grizzlies' tied the game at 2-all on a jumper by junior center John Seyfert.
The Bulldogs took the lead for their second and final time when senior center Bo Segeberg scored at the 18:15 mark of the opening half, giving the Bulldogs a 4-2 advantage. Davis tied the game 4-4 on a lay-up, and then a pair of free throws by junior guard Virgil Matthews, gave the Grizzlies the lead the rest of the way.
Davis scored 18 points in the first half, making 8-of-11 shots and 2-of-3 free throws, as Montana took a 42-34 lead at intermission.
Matthews scored on a lay-up on Montana's first possession of the second half to give the Griz a 44-34 lead, and the Griz led by double figures for the remainder of the game.
Nine players broke into the scoring column for the Grizzlies. Davis was followed by sophomore forward Matt Dlouhy with 13 points, while Matthews scored 12. Davis had a team-high 12 rebounds. Matthews had a game-high 8 assists.
Montana junior guard Kevin Criswell, who scored a team high 17 points in UM's 83-62 exhibition win over the University of Great Falls on Nov. 4, did not suit up due to an ankle injury.
Segeberg, a former player at Montana State, scored a team-high 23 points and pulled down a game-best 13 rebounds. Segeberg was 8-of-16 from the field and 7-of-7 from the line.
Senior guard Matt Luedtke, a former Griz player, added 21 points for the Bulldogs, while junior forward Jeff Feenstra was UM-Western's other double-figure scorer with 13 points.
The Bulldogs made 25-of-68 shot (36.8%), 5-of-29 three-pointers (17.2%) and all of their 13 free throw attempts. Montana was 34-of-75 (45.3%) from the floor, 5-of-22 in treys (22.7%), and made 16-of-19 free throws for 84.2%. The Griz out-rebounded the Bulldogs 50 to 35.
"Our guys recognized that they had to be up on their three-point shooters and (assistant Brad) Coach Huse did a nice job of getting them ready," Krystkowiak said.
Montana opens its season on Sunday, November 21, playing nationally ranked Gonzaga in Spokane in a 3:00 p.m. (Mountain) game.
