Closson's hot hand leads Lady Griz over East Carolina

Freshman Johanna Closson went 7-for-11 from the field and scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Montana Lady Griz past East Carolina in the opening game of the Four Points LAX Turkey Shootout at Pepperdine on Friday afternoon. Montana, which was held to 29.7 percent shooting Wednesday night at Long Beach State, shot 50.0 percent for the game to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Lady Griz will play either Pepperdine or Cal State-Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time.
Montana was hot from the start on Friday, shooting 57.1 percent in the first half to jump out to a 42-31 halftime lead. The Pirates, who shot 40.0 percent for the game, attempted to rally in the second half with the 3-point shot, but went just 2-for-15 (.133) from behind the arc in the second half and 3-for-21 (.143) for the game.
Junior Katie Edwards added 12 points for the Lady Griz, hitting two 3-point shots, and senior Juliann Keller had 11 points, three assists and all three of Montana's steals.
Senior Hollie Tyler scored nine points and added a game-high nine rebounds. The 6-3 center also had a team-high four assists and three blocks.
Senior point guard Lynsey Monaco had eight points, going 3-for-4 from the field, and grabbed three rebounds.
Soraya Hellaby had 12 points to lead ECU, which outrebounded the Lady Griz, 38-31. The Pirate defense forced Montana into 20 turnovers. UM had nine blocks to East Carolina's one.
After facing either the Waves or the Titans on Saturday, the Lady Griz will have a week off before hosting Portland on Sunday, Dec. 5.
