Junior guard Kevin Criswell scored a team-high 17 points to lead the host University of Montana Grizzlies to an 83-62 win over The University of Great Falls Argonauts in an exhibition basketball game at UM's Adams Center/Dahlberg Arena.
"That was a little shaky," admitted first-year Griz mentor Larry Krystkowiak in head coaching debut at his alma mater. "We didn't take care of the ball and we didn't play good defense. It was perfect for an exhibition game."
The Grizzlies shook off some early-season rust and went on a 15-0 run in the second half that took just a little more than two minutes, pulling ahead of the Argos by 21 points, and in the process putting the game out of reach.
Great Falls (2-7) narrowed the Montana lead to 42-36 on two free throws by junior guard Keon Polee with 14:31 left in the game. Griz senior forward Kamarr Davis started his team's scoring run by making two free throws with 13:38 to go, and Montana took a 57-38 lead with 11:21 to go. Criswell scored eight points during Montana's 15-0 run.
The Argos tied the game up at 18-all at the 5:38 mark of the first half on a conventional three-point play by junior guard Todd Tomlinson. On their next possession UGF took its first lead, when freshman guard Aron Cline hit a three-point shot. The teams then traded leads a couple of times, but Montana took the lead (26-25) for good on a pair of free throws by junior forward Corey Easley. The Grizzlies led 31-28 at intermission.
Davis was the Grizzlies' other double-figure scorer with 14 points, although 11 different UM players scored. Sophomore guard Brian Lynch had 9 points and 4 assists, while junior guard Virgil Matthews led UM with 7 rebounds.
Tomlinson led the Argos with 17 points, while junior forward John Chapman had 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The game was marred by 60 fouls (32 by UGF and 28 by UM). The Argos made 22-of-33 free throws, while the Griz struggled from the line, hitting only 14-of-32 (43.8%). Montana's second and final exhibition game is next Friday, November 12, when it hosts Western Montana College in a 6:05 p.m. game.
