Bulldogs hand Lady Griz rare home defeat

Gonzaga used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to take the lead, then held on down the stretch for a 57-51 victory over the Montana Lady Griz at Dahlberg Arena on Friday night. The loss was only Montana's second in its last 26 home games.
The Lady Griz, who dropped their second straight game, fell to 4-3. The Bulldogs improved to 5-2.
Gonzaga became just the 19th nonconference road team to win at Dahlberg Arena during coach Robin Selvig's 26-plus seasons. Selvig has a 154-19 home record against nonconference opponents.
Gonzaga, the preseason favorite to win the West Coast Conference, jumped out to an early 7-0 lead four minutes into the game, but Montana got points from five different players to come back and tie the game at 9-9.
The remainder of the opening half remained tight, with the Zags taking a 26-25 lead to the locker room.
The Lady Griz grabbed a three-point lead, 36-33, with 13:31 to play on a 3-point shot by junior Katie Edwards, but it would be their final lead of the night.
Gonzaga got 3-point baskets on three straight possessions and added another field goal while holding Montana scoreless to go up 44-36.
The Lady Griz came back to cut the lead to two, pulling within 47-45 on a senior Hollie Tyler basket inside with 6:39 to play, but the Bulldogs answered right back and Montana would not get closer than four points the rest of the way.
Tyler led all scorers with 18 points. She also added 12 rebounds and four blocks.
Freshman Johanna Closson was Montana's only other double-figure scorer. She had 10 points and added nine rebounds.
Junior Jody McLeod had seven points, and senior Lynsey Monaco had nine assists.
Shannon Mathews had 17 points to lead Gonzaga. Mathews went 4-for-7 from 3-point range, helping the Bulldogs to a 9-for-22 team effort from behind the stripe. Five different Zags hit a 3-point shot.
Both teams were strong defensively. Gonzaga shot just 33.9 percent, but held Montana to 32.8 percent shooting.
The Zags, who had assists on 16 of their 20 field goals, held a 45-36 advantage on the boards.
Montana has 10 days off until its next game, Dec. 20 at Miami.
