Montana responds with 31-point victory over Maine

The Montana women's basketball team put an emphatic end to its longest losing streak in over five years with an 83-52 victory over Maine in the second game of the Lady Griz Holiday Inn Holiday Classic on Tuesday night at Dahlberg Arena. The Lady Griz, who improved to 5-4, will face Florida State on Wednesday and attempt to win their 22nd Lady Griz Holiday Classic title in the 25 years of the tournament.
UM entered the matchup with the Black Bears on a three-game losing streak.
Maine, which will face Louisville in Wednesday's consolation game, dropped to 4-5.
The Black Bears led just once on Tuesday night, taking a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the game on a jumper by Abby Schrader.
The game was tied at 10-10 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half when Montana quickly put the game out of reach. Over the next nine minutes the Lady Griz went on a 27-3 run to take a commanding 37-13 lead.
Montana took a 43-22 lead to the locker room.
The Lady Griz shot 41.9 percent in the first half and went 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 13-for-13 from the line.
Montana scored the first eight points of the second half, six coming from senior Hollie Tyler, to go up 51-22. The largest lead of the second half reached 39 points.
Freshman Johanna Closson led Montana with 17 points and nine rebounds. Tyler added 16 points and nine boards.
Junior Katie Edwards shot herself out of a recent shooting slump, hitting 6-of-11 shots, 2-for-4 from 3-point range, to total 14 points.
Senior Juliann Keller scored nine points, hitting all three of her 3-point shots, and 11 different Montana players scored at least two points.
The Lady Griz ended up shooting 40.3 percent for the game to Maine's 38.8 percent, but Montana got 18 more shot attempts, the result of 23 offensive rebounds and a scant eight turnovers.
The Lady Griz had a 47-28 rebounding advantage for the game.
Ashley Underwood scored 20 points for Maine, hitting four 3-pointers, and Schrader grabbed 10 rebounds.
Montana finished 23-for-27 from the line after hitting its first 21 attempts.
