Hot-handed Cardinals down Maine at Lady Griz Holiday Classic

Louisville shot 52.0 percent for the game and had four players reach double figures to win the consolation game of the Lady Griz Holiday Inn Holiday Classic at Dahlberg Arena Wednesday night, 69-57 over Maine. Jazz Covington, who had a season-high 21 points for the Cardinals in Tuesday night's loss to Florida State, led Louisville with 19 points.
The Cardinals improved to 9-4. Maine dropped to 4-6.
Louisville shot 53.8 percent in the first half and led nearly the entire opening 20 minutes. UL's largest first-half lead, 36-24, came with just under a minute to play when Covington hit the second of two free throws.
Maine's Abby Schrader scored with 25 seconds remaining to make the halftime score 36-26.
Behind the inspired play of Missy Traversi, who scored a career-high 29 points, Maine not only got back into the game, but took the lead with 11:31 to play, 45-44, on a 3-point shot by Margaret Elderton. Elderton's trey was the finishing touch on a 13-2 run by the Black Bears over a four-minute stretch.
Louisville answered right back on a 3-point shot by Yuliya Tokova to reclaim the lead, and the Cardinals would not trail again.
The UL lead was one, 49-48, with 8:07 to play when the Cardinals went on a decisive 6-0 run over the next minute. Maine would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
The Cardinals went a perfect 4-for-4 in the final minute to put the game away.
Joining Covington in double figures were Missy Taylor with 12 points, Jessica Huggins with 11 and Katie Olson with 10. Olson also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, four on the offensive end.
Traversi was a one-person scoring machine for the Black Bears, totaling over half of her team's points. She hit 10-of-13 shots from the field, 4-for-5 from 3-point range, and added a team-high six rebounds and four assists.
Ashley Underwood added nine points, but no other Maine player finished with more than seven.
