University of Montana women's basketball coach Robin Selvig announced on Friday that Mandy Morales has accepted a scholarship and will join the Lady Griz this fall. The Billings, Mont., native, who originally signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Arizona State, will be required to sit out the 2004-05 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
A 5-9 guard, Morales signed an NLI to play for the Sun Devils but was released from that commitment this summer. After sitting out this coming season, Morales will have three seasons of competition remaining. However, Montana is in the process of filing a request with the NLI Steering Committee to gain a fourth season of competition.
"We couldn't be more excited that Mandy will be a Lady Griz," Selvig said on Friday. "She's a great player and an outstanding young lady and someone we thought the world of when we were recruiting her.
"Mandy is an extremely talented basketball player and someone who has a chance to do outstanding things in her college career."
Morales is a 2004 graduate of Billings West High School. She helped lead the Golden Bears to back-to-back Class AA state championships as a junior and senior and was named all-state four times.
Morales started her high school career as a freshman at Class B Huntley Project where she averaged 20.8 points per game. After transferring to Billings West, Morales averaged 15.3 points per game as a sophomore starter on West's state runner-up team.
During the Golden Bears' first of two championship seasons, Morales averaged 20.4 points per game as BWHS went 20-3. This past winter West went 23-0 with Morales averaging 18.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.
This summer Morales was selected to play for the Montana all-stars in their annual series against Wyoming.
