Forward Andrew Strait had 21 points and 9 rebounds to pace the Maroon team to an 83-74 victory over the Silver squad in The University of Montana?s annual Silver-Maroon scrimmage Wednesday evening in UM?s Adams Center/Dahlberg Arena.
?I was pleased with the overall team effort,? said second-year Griz head coach Larry Krystkowiak. ?I think we are ahead of where we were at this time last year. We only have 12 players right now and they all played 30-plus minutes and really battled down to the wire, and I thought our intensity level was good.?
Strait, a sophomore, and senior guard Virgil Matthews were the only players who did not switch teams during the game, which included four 10-minute quarters. Matthews had 12 points, all for the Maroon team.
Other leading scorers and players who played for both teams, were guards Kevin Criswell and Matt Martin, each scoring a scrimmage-high 27 points. Criswell, a 6-2 senior, and Martin, a 6-1 sophomore, are returning starters for the Grizzlies, who were 18-13 overall last season. Criswell made 10-of-15 shots from the field, including 5-of-9 threepointers, while Martin was 9-of-15 from the floor and made 6-of-11 treys.
Montana?s other returning starter who played, 6-6 junior forward Matt Dlouhy, had 15 points.
John Seyfert, a 6-10 senior center from Stevensville and a returning starter, is out for the season after suffering a knee injury this fall.
Other players getting into the scoring column were junior forward Stuart Mayes (14 points), freshman forward Austin Swift (11 points), junior point guard Bryan Ellis (9 points and 7 assists), junior forward Mike Chavez (9 points), freshman forward Kyle Sharp (8 points), and freshman center Eric Van Vliet (4 points).
The leading rebounder was Dlouhy with 11, and he was followed by Strait (9), Sharp (8), Criswell (7), Chavez (7), Mayes (6), Criswell had 4 steals, while Dlouhy had 3.
Strait, who has added more than 25 pounds since last season, made 10-of-15 shots from the field.
Redshirt freshman forward Jordan Hasquet (6-9) also missed the game with an injury.
?It will be good to have Jordan back in the mix,? Krystkowiak said. ?We need his size in the post, especially with the unfortunate loss of John.?
The first of Montana?s two exhibition games is Friday, Nov. 4, when the Grizzlies host College of Great Falls.
