Edwards' 29 not enough as Silver downs Maroon

Senior Katie Edwards had 29 points and freshman Mandy Morales added 23 for Maroon, but it was Silver that came away with a narrow 77-75 victory at Thursday night's Maroon and Silver scrimmage. Freshman Tamara Guardipee scored 26 points to lead Silver.
No team had a lead of more than three points over the final 6:23. The 11th and final tie of the game came after a Morales free throw at the 3:42 mark tied the game at 66-66.
Guardipee hit a free throw on Silver's next possession, and it held the lead the rest of the way.
Maroon had possession of the ball for the final possession, but a Morales shot in the lane was off the mark with four seconds to play.
Edwards hit 10-of-19 shots for her 29 points, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Morales scored eight of her 23 points from the line and added five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Guardipee finished with a double-double, totaling 11 rebounds to go along with her 26 points. The 6-3 center went 10-of-14 from the free throw line.
Joining Guardipee in double figures for the victorious Silver team were freshmen Britney Lohman and Sonya Rogers. Rogers also added a game-high eight assists. Freshman Lauren Beck had nine points and eight rebounds for Silver.
Morales and Edwards were the lone double-figure scorers for Maroon. Junior Sara Gale added seven points and a game-high 12 boards and senior Jody McLeod added seven points and six rebounds.
Despite the loss, Maroon out-rebounded Silver, 48-40, and out-shot it 38.5 percent to 37.9 percent.
The Lady Griz open exhibition play next Wednesday, Nov. 2, against Northwest Sports at 7:05 p.m. Exhibition play will come to an end on Sunday, Nov. 13, when Montana hosts Deja Vu.
The regular season opens Friday, Nov. 18, when the Lady Griz play at Utah State.
