Lady Griz pull away for 72-54 victory over Deja vu

The University of Montana women's basketball team shot 48.3 percent in the second half to pull away for a 72-54 victory over Deja vu Sunday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena. The score was tied 32-32 at the half, but the Lady Griz posted 40 second-half points while limiting the former Lady Griz standouts to 26.5 percent second-half shooting and 22 points.
Sophomore Johanna Closson led all scorers with 18 points. Freshman Tamara Guardipee had a double-double by the half and finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Senior Katie Edwards also reached double figures with 11 points.
Julie Deming led Deja vu with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Deja vu led by as many as seven points in the opening half, taking a 23-16 lead at the 7:35 mark on a Deming jumper, but the Lady Griz scored eight straight points to take a 24-23 lead when Closson hit a 3-pointer with 5:12 to play.
Deja vu took a 3-point lead early in the second half when Deming hit an acrobatic shot in the lane and was fouled, but it would be its only lead of the second half.
Closson came down and hit a 3-point shot to tie the score at 35-35. Guardipee hit a jumper on Montana's next possession, and the Lady Griz would not trail again.
The lead reached double figures for the first time when sophomore Dana Conway put the Lady Griz up 60-49 with 7:09 to play. The 18-point final margin of victory was the largest of the game for Montana.
Conway came off the bench to score nine points on 4-of-5 shooting. Junior Sara Gale had eight points, five rebounds and three steals in 16 minutes. Freshman Sonya Rogers dished out a game-high five assists.
Joining Deming in double figures for Deja vu was Skyla Sisco, who had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals in 18 minutes.
Montana shot 33.8 percent and limited Deja vu to 31.3 percent shooting. The Lady Griz had a 59-38 rebounding advantage.
Montana opens regular-season play next Friday at Utah State.
