Montana defeats Utah Valley State, 75-59

Ten different players hit the scoring column for The University of Montana Grizzlies Tuesday evening, as they defeated the visiting Utah Valley State University Wolverines 75-59 in a non-league game in front of 2,984 fans in UM??s Dahlberg Arena.
It was the third straight win for the Grizzlies, who have won 81-75 at Loyola Marymount, and also had recent home victories over Western Oregon (86-57) and Utah Valley State (75-59).
The Wolverines (2-4), a Division I Independent from Orem, stayed with the Grizzlies (3-1) in the opening half, and took an 18-17 lead with 11:01 left until intermission on a conventional three-point play by forward David Heck.
Montana regained the lead (20-18) for a short time on another conventional three-point play, this time by Griz junior forward Matt Dlouhy. However, the Wolverines out-scored the Grizzlies 6-0 to take a short-lived 26-20 advantage on a three-point shot by Heck with 8:23 left until halftime.
The Griz quickly chipped away at Utah Valley State??s lead though, out-scoring the Wolverines 16-0 over the next six minutes. Montana took a double-digit (41-28) lead on a three-point shot by sophomore guard Matt Martin with 25 seconds left in the opening half, and UM led by 10 or more points for the remainder of the game.
Montana cruised in the second half and led by as many as 24 points on two occasions, the last coming with 3:32 to go when ??true?? freshman guard Greg Spurgetis, a walk-on from Spokane, scored his first career points on a short jump shot, making it 73-49 Griz.
Sophomore forward Andrew Strait and Martin led the Grizzlies with 13 points each, while Dlouhy added 10.
UM redshirt freshman Jordan Hasquet, from local Sentinel High School, had his first career start and scored 9 points, as did senior starting guard Virgil Matthews.
Matthews led UM with a game-high 7 rebounds, while Martin had 5.
Heck, a junior from Arlington, Texas, scored a game-high 19 points, with 14 of those coming in the first half. Senior center Ben Devoe added 14 points for the Wolverines, while junior forward Matt Peterson chipped in 10 points. Senior forward Russell Wesley led UVUS with 6 rebounds off the bench.
Montana continued its hot shooting, making 29-of-49 shots (59.2%) from the field and 7-of-15 (46.7%) from three-point range. Utah Valley State was 24-of-59 (40.7%) from the floor and made 4-of-14 (28.6%) treys. UM had a 32-26 rebounding edge.
The Griz will host the Stanford Cardinal of the Pac-10 Conference this Friday, December 2, in a 7:05 p.m. game in Dahlberg Arena.
The Wolverines host Sacramento State on Saturday, December 3.
