Morales named Big Sky Player of the Week

University of Montana freshman Mandy Morales was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. Morales was honored for her role in UM's victories last week over Santa Clara, Miami and Gonzaga.
For the three games, the Billings, Mont., product averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.7 steals per game.
"Mandy had a good week," Lady Griz coach Robin Selvig said Monday afternoon, "and the team had a good week. We beat some pretty good teams. I was real happy with Mandy. It looks like the knee's healthy, and she did a good job on both ends of the floor. We're excited to have her back playing."
Against Santa Clara last Tuesday, Morales came off the bench to spark Montana to an 82-77 comeback win. The 5-9 guard had a team-high 18 points and added five rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes of action. Morales, who scored 11 of her 18 points in the second half as the Lady Griz rallied from a 38-36 halftime deficit, got to the line a team-high 13 times, hitting eight.
Against the one-loss Hurricanes last Friday, Morales scored 27 points and also finished with nine rebounds, six assists, four steals and a blocked shot to lead Montana to an 83-74 win. The 27 points were the most ever scored by a Lady Griz freshman.
Morales hit just four field goals in the win, but went 18-for-21 from the free throw line, both Montana single-game records. The 18 makes also tied the Big Sky Conference record. She went 11-for-12 from the line in the second half as UM held off Miami's repeated rallies.
At Gonzaga Sunday afternoon, Morales had 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals as the Lady Griz won their fourth straight, 72-60 over the Bulldogs.
The victory snapped Gonzaga's 14-game home-court winning streak and was the first loss suffered by either the GU men or women at the two-year-old McCarthy Athletic Center, a stretch of 33 games.
Morales and Montana host Idaho Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena in their final game before the Christmas break.
