UW-Milwaukee defeats Montana, 78-74

Senior guard Boo Davis made two key three-point shots in the final two minutes as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers defeated the host University of Montana Grizzlies 78-74 Friday evening in the "Battle of the Mid'Majors" in a great Division I college basketball game in UM??s Dahlberg Arena.
The contest featured 10 lead changes and 10 ties by the Griz and Panthers, ranked 14th and 16th respectively in the most recent Division I Mid-Major Poll.
A vocal crowd of 7,213 fans ?C the second biggest ever to see a Griz men??s game, saw the Panthers (8-3) snap the Grizzlies (10-2) 10-game winning streak. Montana had won 10 in a row since losing (90-69) its season opener at Boise State on November 18. (The largest men??s attendance in Dahlberg Arena history is 7,332 against Sacramento State in 2003).
The Panthers, a Sweet 16 team last season that had a record of 26-6, have now won four straight games and seven of their last eight.
The Panthers took a slim, 39-37 lead into the locker-room at halftime, as junior guard Tyrone Young made a jump shot with one second to go until intermission.
The Grizzlies knotted the game up 39-39 in the opening seconds of the second half on a driving lay-up by senior guard Kevin Criswell.
The rest of the final half was nip-and-tuck and featured numerous lead changes and seven ties.
Montana took a lead with 2:58 left on a three-pointer byCriswell, making it 72-69, UM. But seconds later, with 2:54 remaining, Davis connected on a deep three-pointer, his second of the game, and tied the score a 72-all.
Montana regained the lead for the final time in the contest on a pair of free throws by senior guard Virgil Mathews, giving the Griz a 74-72 advantage, but Davis buried another trey on the Panthers?? next trip down the floor at the 1:53 mark to put his team up 75-74, and UW-Milwaukee never relinquished the lead.
Strait, one of the leading field goal percentage shooters in the nation, made 9-of-13 field goal attempts and scored a game-high 23 points, but was hampered with foul trouble. Criswell was the Grizzlies?? only other double-digit scorer with 18 points.
Strait led UM with 6 boards, while Matthews had 5.
Davis led the Panthers with a team-high 20 points, and made 6-of-10 field goal shots and was 5-of-7 from three-point range. Also in double figures for UWM were senior forward Joah Tucker with 16 points, senior forward Adrian Tigert added 15, and Young scored 10 off the bench.
UWM's Tucker had a game-high 9 rebounds, while Tigert grabbed 7.
The Panthers were an even 50% from the floor in the game, making 28-of-56 shots, while the Grizzlies were 27-of-55 for 49.1%. UW-Milwaukee and Montana were both 6-of-19 for 31.6% from three-point range.
UW-Milwaukee ended with a 36-28 rebounding advantage, and out-rebounded the Griz 23 to 16 in the second half. Each team had 10 turnovers.
