Lady Griz down Idaho State, one step from NCAA bid

Top-seeded Montana had two players record double-doubles and the Lady Griz advanced to the championship game of the 2005 Big Sky Conference tournament with a 78-67 victory over Idaho State on Friday night at Dahlberg Arena. Montana will go for its second straight league tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament Saturday afternoon against No. 2 seed Weber State.
Senior Lynsey Monaco had 11 points and 11 assists for Montana, which improved to 21-7 on the season. Junior Jody McLeod also posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Junior Katie Edwards led the Lady Griz with 17 points, hitting 4-of-8 3-point attempts.
Idaho State, which ends its season at 13-16, had four players record double figures. Christa Brossman had 16, India Soo had 15, Natalie Doma had 12 and Molly Hays had 11.
A tight, back-and-forth first half ended with Montana leading 39-38. Both teams scorched the nets over the opening 20 minutes, with the Bengals shooting 57.7 percent and the Lady Griz 53.3 percent. ISU went 7-for-12 from 3-point range.
Idaho State held the lead for the final time at 45-44. Edwards put Montana up for good with a basket inside to make it 46-45 with 15:43 remaining.
Edwards' basket sparked an 8-0 run that put the Lady Griz up seven, 52-45. The lead reached 13 when senior Juliann Keller hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with 3:36 to play and ISU didn't get closer than seven down the stretch.
Eight days prior, when Montana defeated Idaho State, 70-52, at Dahlberg Arena, the Bengals won the rebounding battle, 39-33, which included 20 on the offensive end. On Saturday night Montana dominated the glass, 43-23, allowing ISU just five offensive rebounds while grabbing 17 itself.
Montana shot 46.0 percent for the game. Idaho State shot 44.2 percent.
Against Weber State on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Griz will be attempting to earn a spot in their 16th NCAA tournament.
