A driving layup by Weber State's Janie Rayback with 20 seconds remaining proved to be the difference Thursday night as the Wildcats sent Montana to its second straight narrow defeat, 50-49, at Dahlberg Arena. Lady Griz freshman Mandy Morales missed a 3-point shot with 12 seconds to play, and after WSU's Chelsey Warburton missed the front end of a one-and-one with seven seconds remaining, UM sophomore Johanna Closson was off the mark with an 18-foot shot from the right wing at the buzzer.
Montana, which has dropped back-to-back Big Sky Conference games for the first time since January 2003, fell to 14-5 overall, 3-3 in league play.
Weber State improved to 10-9, 4-2 in BSC play.
After a 27-27 halftime tie, the Wildcats appeared to be pulling away when they put down the second-half defensive clamps. Weber State held the Lady Griz to just six points over the opening 12:38 of the second half and held an 11-point lead, 44-33, with 7:22 to play.
Senior Katie Edwards stopped WSU's 11-0 run with a driving layup, and sophomore Dana Conway and senior Jody McLeod also added scores to pull Montana within five, 44-39, with 5:32 to play.
That's when Morales electrified the crowd, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Lady Griz up one, 45-44, with 4:00 to play.
Weber State's Tashina Taylor scored inside with 2:40 remaining, putting the Wildcats back on top, 48-46, but Closson's only field goal of the game, a 3-pointer at the 2:17 mark, put Montana back up, 49-48.
The two teams combined to miss their next four shots before Rayback's game-winner with 20 seconds to play.
Morales led all scorers with 16 points and added a team-high seven rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks.
Conway added nine points, McLeod finished with eight and freshman Tamara Guardipee had six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Lady Griz shot a season-low 28.6 percent for the game.
Taylor and Rayback both had 13 points to lead the Wildcats. Montana limited Chelsey Warburton, the league's top 3-point shooter, to three points on 1-of-10 shooting.
Weber State, which shot 36.5 percent for the game, had a 45-38 rebounding advantage.
