Griz drop second straight, fall 95-70 at ISU

Idaho State limited The University of Montana men's basketball team to 31.7 percent shooting in a 95-70 victory Saturday afternoon in Pocatello, Idaho. The loss, which was the Grizzlies' second consecutive, dropped their season mark to 16-5 overall and 6-3 in Big Sky Conference action. The Bengals improved to 10-11 on the year, 2-7 in league play.
Montana was led offensively by sophomore forward Andrew Strait who scored a team-best 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Strait also had a team-high eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Freshman forward Jordan Hasquet added 11 points and was the only other Grizzly to score in double figures.
Montana shot 43.8 percent (14-of-32) from the field in the first half, but made just 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) baskets in the second stanza. The Grizzlies were miserable from behind the 3-point arc, making just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) including an 0-for-9 effort in the second half.
Idaho State out-rebounded the Grizzlies, 37-35, and had 16 assists to UM's nine. Montana registered nine steals in the contests. ISU recorded only three steals.
Idaho State shot 55.8 percent (29-of-52) from the field, 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) on 3-pointers. Slim Millien scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Bengals scoring. Ryan Baumgartner, who was one of four ISU players to score in double figures, added 22 points while shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field.
Montana trailed only once in the first 10 minutes of the game. A layup by Hasquet gave UM a 13-9 advantage at the 12:25 mark. The Grizzlies managed to build a 30-22 advantage with 4:09 remaining, their largest lead of the half.
The game changed at the 3:38 mark in the first half when UM junior Matt Dlouhy was whistled for an intentional foul on ISU's Logan Kinghorn. Dlouhy, who was being screened by another ISU player, grabbed Kinghorn's jersey as he elevated to take a shot. The Bengal player fell awkwardly on his back and laid on the floor for a moment.
After Kinghorn was brought to his feet, he approached the Montana bench and was subsequently given a technical and ejected from the game. Dlouhy was also given a technical and ejected for the intentional foul.
After the malay was sorted out, Idaho State shot and made three free throws to pull with five points. Criswell made only one of Montana's two technical free throws which gave UM the 31-25 lead.
Montana held on and took a 40-34 lead into the half.
The Bengals opened the second half on a 9-2 run, culminated by a Baumgartner jumper which gave ISU a 43-42 lead with 17:25 remaining in the game. Montana battled back to take a 48-46 lead after Strait made a basket at the 14:40 mark. That would be the last lead of the game for the Grizzlies.
Idaho State out-scored the Grizzlies, 49-22, over the final 14 minutes to earn its second league win of the season.
Montana (16-5, 6-3 BSC) returns to action next Saturday with an 8 pm home game against rival Montana State.
