Griz women top Bobcats, 4-3

After dropping the doubles point, The University of Montana women's tennis team rallied back for a 4-3 win over rival Montana State Thursday at the Lindsay Tennis Center in Missoula. The Grizzlies received singles victories at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 in their 2006 Big Sky Conference opener.
The win improved UM to 4-4 overall, 1-0 in league action. The Bobcats dropped to 6-8 on the year, 1-2 in conference play.
The Griz recorded a victory at No. 1 doubles, but lost the point by dropping matches at Nos. 2 and 3. Sophomore Mari Castello and freshman Liz Walker teamed up for their second consecutive doubles win of the year, an 8-4 victory over MSU??s Nuria Lozano and Nicole Luetolf.
Castello, from Belleville, Ill., was the lone Grizzly to win both singles and doubles contests. The 2005 all-conference selection also registered a straight-set win over Luetolf at the No. 2 position, 7-5, 6-1.
Junior Cheyne Ursich also won in straight sets, toppling Vera Vasileva 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Freshmen Martyna Nowak (pronounced no ?C VACK) and Alexandra Ulesanu (pronounced OOH ?C lay ?C SHAW ?C new) each recorded straight-set singles victories for the Griz. Nowak won 7-5, 6-4 over Lisa Clark at the No. 4 slot, while Ulesanu cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Katy Clarke at the No. 6 position.
Montana (4-4, 1-0 BSC) returns to action March 26-28 with three matches at the UC Irvine Invitational. The Griz face a Sunday dual against San Francisco (9-4) and a Monday match against host team UC Irvine (8-8). Montana will face an opponent yet to be determined on Tuesday. Teams joining Montana include: UC Irvine, Idaho State, Nevada, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara.
