The Montana women's tennis team wrapped up its fall tournament season with main draw and consolation draw wins in singles competition at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane over the weekend.
Â
Grizzly freshman Meghna Anand and sophomore Monika Fizova each picked up multiple singles wins to take bracket titles as the Grizzlies went 9-7 overall in singles in a strong field with some of the top teams in the Western U.S. represented.
Â
"We got good work from everyone, but it's nice to see results from everyone. We've continued to see growth and competitive ability throughout the semester, so putting it together against good competition is huge," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Â
"Meghna won four matches to win her draw. She played with composure. It's good to see the maturity she's gained in a couple months' time from when she arrived to the end of the fall. Monika lost in the first round but came back to win three quality matches and all her sets were super tight. She was competitive throughout."
Â
Anand, a Canadian out of Truro, Nova Scotia, went 4-for-4 in singles to claim the Gold Draw championship. She beat Amina Advic of Seattle U in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) in the round of 16 to open the tournament. In the quarterfinal she beat Isabella Marquart of Portland 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (5) in a third set tiebreaker before moving on to beat Karla Brown of the hometown Bulldogs 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinal. Anand got a Big Sky preview in the final, defeating Chenyue Xu of Idaho in another third set tiebreaker 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (12).
Â
After dropping her first match in the Gold Draw round of 16, Fizova earned three-straight wins to claim a consolation title. She fell to Brown in the main draw, but rebounded to beat another Vandal in Soha Singh 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (6), to advance in the consolation bracket. She met Advic in the semifinal and earned a straight-set, 6-2, 7-5 win, and got another Big Sky preview in the final, beating Eastern Washington's Zoe Pradel 6-4, 6-2, to win the bracket.
Â
With the fall season in the rearview mirror, Montana now ends the fall semester with a training block before returning in the spring to start the championship duals season back in Spokane against the Zags on Jan. 18.
Â
"We're going to continue to try to make gains and see how much they can mature and grow before the end of the semester," said Ascher.
Â
"The big thing will be to take accountability and ownership of what they've learned over the past few months and keep working in the offseason. That will determine how well they start the semester. They each have things to work on from the fall, so I'm hungry to come back and make something happen in the spring."
